MONTHLY
SPECIALS
July and August are sultry months and we have
devised a great way for you to indulge and enjoy, refresh and stay
cool!
Your journey will begin with a ride up the mountain to the cooler
temperatures of the higher elevation and some fascinating
explorations.
You’ll visit the oldest stone bridge in South Carolina and pass by
the old growth forest surrounding the Greenville Reservoir.
Wind your way slowly up this scenic route to the tiny town of
Saluda, first known as a traders' route and crossroads. In the late
1800’s the town of Saluda gained fame and popularity for its cool
mountain air and became a bustling tourist area. Fine Victorian
homes and grand Inns were built.
A railroad track was built to carry tourists up the mountain and it
became known as the steepest railroad grade in the country. The
tracks run from an elevation of around 1,000 feet in Tryon NC, to
2,200 feet in Saluda. Many lives were lost in an effort to build the
railroad and lives were lost running down the steep grade to Tryon.
The tracks, now abandoned, do not diminish the special allure that
Saluda exudes.
Now, Saluda boasts eclectic shops, boutiques and restaurants, which
you will visit and receive discount coupons from a few special,
charming and unique establishments.
Enjoy lunch at The Purple Onion, a favorite among locals and
tourists alike, and receive a free beverage with the purchase of
your lunch. Next, browse through specialty shops and markets (using
your coupons to receive discounts) and then spend the early
afternoon kayaking down the Green River. In the late afternoon,
you’ll wind your way down the mountain and tour a lovely waterfall
(be there before 6 PM when it closes).
Come back to the Inn to freshen up before dining at a favorite
Landrum restaurant, Persimmons, where a free glass of wine awaits
you with the purchase of your dinner entrée.
Make arrangements ahead of time and our masseuse will come to your
room or cottage and give you an exceptional deduction.
Then, after this day’s wonderful adventure, you’re sure to have a
deep sleep on the wonderful, indulgent mattresses at The Red Horse
Inn!
